Domestic Abuse

Early interventions – a holistic whole family approach.

Addressing domestic abuse holistically is essential to mitigate its impact on families. Trauma-informed support for as long as it is needed, coupled with access to resources and a feeling of safety, can help families begin the journey to healing.

We play a crucial role in supporting individuals by creating a safe, empowering and understanding environment from which to build.

Seen Heard Believed provides trauma-informed early interventions shaped from lived experience, to vulnerable and struggling families in Middlesbrough.

Supporting recovery from domestic violence through an understanding of trauma

Our trauma-informed work plays a crucial role in supporting individuals who have experienced domestic abuse by creating a safe, empowering, and understanding environment. Here’s how we help:

  1. Safety and trust: We prioritise creating a sense of physical and emotional safety for people, ensuring they feel secure in seeking support. Building trust is central, as survivors often find it difficult to trust others after experiencing abuse.
  2. Understanding trauma responses: We acknowledge the lasting effects of abuse, such as hypervigilance, anxiety, depression, and difficulty trusting others. Recognising these responses as normal reactions to trauma helps reduce stigma and blame.
  3. Empowerment and choice: Survivors are provided with choices and encouraged to take an active role in their healing journey. This approach helps them regain a sense of control and autonomy that may have been taken away by their abuser.
  4. Holistic support: We consider the whole person and family, addressing not only the immediate effects of abuse but also their physical, mental, and social needs. It often involves collaboration with multiple services to provide comprehensive support.
  5. Avoiding retraumatisation: By being sensitive to triggers and understanding the impact of trauma, professionals can avoid actions or language that might inadvertently cause survivors to relive their trauma.
  6. Building resilience: We focuses on strengths and resilience, helping survivors recognise their ability to heal and move forward. It fosters hope and self-efficacy.
  7. Support for complex needs: Many survivors face challenges such as housing instability, financial difficulties, or legal issues. We address these interconnected needs while respecting the survivor’s experiences and choices.

By focusing on compassion, respect and understanding, our work helps survivors of domestic abuse and their family to heal, regain their independence, and rebuild their lives on their own terms.
